SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, CA, November 16, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- San Fernando Valley skin doctor, Dr. Peyman Ghasri, shares the news of the recently approved injected drug designed to combat melanoma skin cancer. Melanoma is responsible for about 10,000 deaths annually and affects more than 70,000 Americans a year, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Imlygic, or talimogene laherparepvec, which has been approved to treat melanoma that develops in the skin and the lymph nodes, was developed using a genetically modified version of the herpes virus. It is intended to treat cancers that cannot be surgically treated.

According to health.usnews.com, Imlygic can be injected directly into the cancerous lesions. As the modified virus reproduces, it destroys the melanoma skin cancer cells. It is injected periodically over a six-month period until all the lesions are destroyed or other treatments are used. More than 400 people were involved in the clinical studies, and 16 percent of them were successfully treated with Imlygic.

Dr. Peyman Ghasri, San Fernando Valley skin cancer doctor, offers routine skin cancer screenings. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and regular screenings are among the best defenses. The mortality rate of melanoma, which accounts for 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths, is directly linked to the extent of the disease. "Early detection saves lives," according to Dr. Ghasri's team. "Patient skin self-examination, regular physician-directed total-body skin exams and patient education are the keys to early detection."

Along with skin cancer screenings, San Fernando Valley dermatologist, Dr. Ghasri, offers comprehensive skin care treatment, including:
