San Fernando Valley Dermatologist, Dr. Peyman Ghasri, Weighs in On the Effects of Stress on Skin Health

Stress is something everyone deals with and has shown a correlation to a number of skin conditions, including dry scalp, oily skin, hair loss, itchy rashes and more.

TARZANA, CA, January 07, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- San Fernando Valley dermatologist, Dr. Peyman Ghasri, weighs in on the effects of stress on skin health. Stress is a natural part of life. Ancient humans developed a physical response to stress as a way to protect them. When in a dangerous situation, their bodies would be flooded with hormones to keep energy levels high and boost heart rate and blood pressure levels so that they could better flee or fight the danger. Today, humans may not be facing as many life-threatening situations, but the body still responds to perceived threats with a flood of stress hormones. Over time, this can take a toll on health. Researchers have recently found a link between chronic stress and skin problems.

According to a study that was published in "Acta Dermato-Venereologica" and outlined by MedicalNewsToday.com, stress can aggravate certain skin conditions, such as alopecia and pruritis. The study focused on more than 400 students, who are often facing a variety of stressful situations including financial, academic, personal and social stressors. The students were divided into groups based on their perceived stress level and evaluated for skin symptoms, including:

- Dry scalp or dandruff
- Oily skin or scalp
- Hair loss or hair pulling
- Excess sweating
- Itchy rashes such as those associated with dermatitis and eczema
- Nail biting
- Scaly skin

Stress was strongly correlated with these bothersome symptoms. It was not found to be associated with acne, dry skin, warts or facial rashes. While these symptoms were self-reported and there was no physical exam, researchers believed that the results were informative and could provide more insight for dermatologists. Dr. Ghasri, expert in face and hand rejuvenation, regularly works with patients with these common skin issues. For patients with stress-related eczema or other skin problems, the best treatment plan may combine not only treatment for the symptoms but also treatments designed to manage the underlying stress.
