CAMBRIDGE, MA, January 28, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rob Moir, Ph.D., Director of the Ocean River Institute, has been named a Worldwide Branding Executive of the Year in Environmental Stewardship & Conservation. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Branding membership.

Dr. Moir has 39 years of professional experience, with seven years as a director of the Ocean River Institute. Throughout his career, he has established himself as an expert in ecosystem-based resource management. On a daily basis, he is responsible for coordinating with local groups to help save the environment. Additionally, he handles fundraising campaigns, answers phone calls and maintains a network of Ocean River Institute partners, connecting them with resources and services to maximize their impact.

Dr. Moir is an educator, scientist and activist with a proven history of institutional management and marine policy success. He has been a leader of citizen science and efforts to clean up Salem Sound and Boston Harbor, and a president of advocacy organizations, including Salem Sound Harbor Monitors, Salem Sound 2000 and Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, through his appointment by the secretary of interior to the Boston Harbor Islands Partnership. He was a curator of natural history at the Peabody Essex Museum, a curator of education at the New England Aquarium and an executive director of the Discovery Museums in Acton, Mass. Dr. Moir was the Sea Education Association's first assistant scientist to work consecutive voyages of the R.V. Westward in 1979 and 1980.

Looking back, Dr. Moir attributes his success to his organizational, management, interactive, listening and communication skills, and ability to learn from others and from his experiences. He became involved in his profession because of his desire to protect the environment. The highlight of his career was initiating bioregional and ecosystem-based collaborative management by naming a portion of the Massachusetts Bay 'Salem Sound,' and bringing together the five municipalities, an engaged constituency of citizen scientists and eco-savvy residents to improve environmental qualities of the region.

Dr. Moir received a Ph.D. in environmental studies from Antioch University New England in 2002, a Master of Science in teaching, also from Antioch University New England, in 1979, and a Bachelor of Arts in natural science from Hampshire College in 1977. In addition to his degrees, he has earned a certification in ecology from The Marine Biological Laboratory in 1979. He is a former president of the National Marine Educators Association, a former president of the Essex County Ornithological Club, a member of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council, and a chairman of the advisory council of the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area. In 1996, Dr. Moir completed the Switzer Environmental Fellowship, through the Robert & Patricia Switzer Foundation. He has also been honored with a James Centorino Award for Distinguished Performance in Marine Education through the National Marine Educators Association in 1988 and a Rockefeller Brothers Fund Award for the Development of a College Course on Cetacean Biology, Ecology and Conservation in 1976. In years to come, Dr. Moir intends to further engage citizens and families as eco-stewards to create clean and healthy environments, and attain a better quality of life for humans and wildlife. He would also like to see an increased responsible stewardship of natural resources, including oceans, rivers and watersheds, by the government.
