Homeowners in Toronto Should Prepare Now Before the Summer Flooding Begins

Despite a record dry season, heavy rainfalls expected this summer in Toronto.

TORONTO, ON, July 07, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As we approach the 3rd anniversary of the most costly flooding in the history of Toronto, Nusite Waterproofing is encouraging homeowners to take the necessary steps to avoid becoming the next victims.

Toronto is a city that was built over many forgotten rivers and creeks. These waterways were pushed into the sewer systems and have since been forgotten. However, many are still in existence as underground rivers that run under neighborhoods and businesses. Their hidden presence remains a potential hazard when heavy rain falls on the city with grounds already saturated with water.

Officials believe there are 42 areas in the Greater Toronto Area where homeowners remain at risk of flooding during heavy rains. Having been born and raised in Toronto, David Steinberg, owner of Nusite Waterproofing, is familiar with the risk, "This city and the people in it, are what keep Nusite Waterproofing working to not only protect and increase property value but to safeguard families' homes and health."

Recent studies have shown that Canada is experiencing, on average, 20 more days of rain a year than in the 1950s. Even with the city constantly working to update the underground pipes and sewers, every home is at risk of potential flooding. With the majority of homeowners insurance claims in Canada resulting from water damage, Nusite Waterproofing has compiled a list of steps you can take to help protect your most valuable assets: your home and family. The best way to avoid a potential problem is to be prepared before it starts. Here are some steps to take before the next rainfall:

1 - Review and familiarize yourself with your homeowner and flood insurance policies. After the 2013 flood, many insurance policies limited what was covered under a basic policy; verify that your home has proper coverage before a storm hits.

2 - If you have a sump pump, make sure it is operating correctly. Consider adding a backup power source for your pump. During heavy storms, power outages are common, and it is important to ensure your pump continues working.

3 - Check your foundation for cracks and water leaks when it rains. If any water is getting in, consider getting it repaired before the summer rains come. During heavy rains, waterproofing companies are overrun with service calls, so it is a good idea to have these looked at and repaired before it becomes an emergency.

4 - Check your eaves troughs (gutters) to make sure they are cleared of debris and working correctly to channel water away from your home.

5 - Check the grading around your home and make sure water will run away from your home instead of towards it during a storm.

6 - Check your sewer line to make sure it is clear of debris and not clogged.

7 - If you have valuables in your basement, have a plan in place to quickly move them if your basement begins to flood.

8 - Plan now before the heavy rains come. Waiting until you have a problem will cost you more in both time and money.
