Baker & Gilchrist Launches Scholarship Program to Raise Awareness About Medical Malpractice

Students are encouraged to share potential solutions to prevent deadly medical errors.

We want to encourage ideas that may improve the healthcare system and potentially prevent an error from ever happening.

AVON, IN, September 20, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Claiming more than 250,000 lives per year, medical errors rank just below heart disease and cancer as a leading cause of death in the United States, researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine have reported. To raise awareness of this dangerous trend, the dedicated medical malpractice attorneys at Baker & Gilchrist are launching a scholarship program aimed at soliciting ideas and solutions from the brightest young minds across the United States.

The firm is encouraging high school seniors, college students, and future medical professionals in other types of vocational programs to submit an essay or video detailing fresh ideas to combat the alarming statistics related to medical errors. The top applicants will receive scholarships of:
- $1,250 for first place
- $750 for second place
- $500 for third place

The idea for this scholarship program is based on the firm's belief that the next generation of healthcare professionals will shape the future of the industry and improve on best practices.

"In the area of medical malpractice law, we sometimes find that changes come only as a result of negligence being brought to the attention of the healthcare provider," attorney Caroline A. Gilchrist explains. "However, we want to encourage ideas that may improve the healthcare system and potentially prevent an error from ever happening. Our hope is that by encouraging students to participate in this contest, some of these ideas might surface."

Students can learn about the entry requirements for the scholarship contest on the firm's website. All entries are due November 30, and winners will be announced December 15.
