Maine Eye Doctors on New Horizons in Glaucoma Vision Loss

"Based on evidence and clinical data from promising "breakthrough" approaches, we are hopeful of being able to bring advances in glaucoma treatment and vision loss to Maine in the foreseeable future," stated Glaucoma Specialist Samuel Solish, MD.

PORTLAND, OR, January 04, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Our patient care approach for preventing and avoiding vision loss from glaucoma has been to work with patients, primary care physicians and primary care eye doctors to stress the importance of regular eye exams with the appropriate level of glaucoma testing based on each patient's individual risk factors. In this way, we have worked to communicate the importance of early detection, diagnosis and treatment. Still, there are way too many patients who do not have the needed eye exams and testing and are losing or about to lose vision. Keep in mind that the most common type of glaucoma has no symptoms," explained Dr. Solish.

"On the horizon and now moving from the laboratory and into clinical trials are a number of glaucoma therapies that are not based on simply lowering eye pressure but rather on "neuroprotection" and "regeneration," shared Robert Daly, M.D. a Glaucoma Specialist at Eyecare Medical Group. "Glaucoma is really a disease of certain nerve cells in the retina and the optic nerve. A high pressure in the eye can damage these sensitive cells and this is what results in lost vision. The new therapeutic approaches will give us the ability to protect these cells in patients who are at risk of glaucoma vision loss and if it does occur, the ability to regenerate these cells and restore vision. These are the breakthroughs the Eyecare Medical Group physicians are carefully watching as they develop so we can bring them to our patients. For the moment, the key to preventing vision loss from glaucoma is early detection, diagnosis and treatment," explained Dr. Daly.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month and a perfect time to remind people take the important step of a routine eye exam to avoid vision loss from glaucoma. More than 3 million people in the United States have glaucoma and The National Eye Institute estimates this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030 making glaucoma the leading cause of preventable blindness. African-Americans and our Latino populations are at a very high risk with a 6-8 greater prevalence as compared to Caucasians.
