Ellen Oakes, Ph.D., Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Clinical Psychology

Ellen Oakes spent her career working in private practice and guiding students at Oklahoma University Medical School



Though she is now retired, Dr. Oakes has remained active for the past two years as a consultant for a nonprofit organization known as the Emergency Responder Assistance Program.

    EDMOND, OK, January 31, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ellen Oakes has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. For 22 years prior to her retirement, Ellen Oakes worked in private practice as a licensed clinical psychologist in Oklahoma City. Dr. Oakes, an Oklahoma native, prepared for her career by graduating summa cum laude from Oklahoma City University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and psychology. She went on to receive a Master of Science in clinical psychology in 1963 and a Ph.D. in 1967 from the University of Oklahoma. Her education also included training in psychology at the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City and the Cerebral Palsy Center in Norman, Okla., as well as an internship in psychology through Guidance Service in Norman, Okla.

After a brief stint as a staff psychologist with Guidance Service, Dr. Oakes joined the faculty at Oklahoma University Medical School as an assistant professor of psychology. She then spent 13 years as a supervisor of psychology interns at the school. Meanwhile, Dr. Oakes founded the Timberridge Institute in Oklahoma City. She directed the organization for 20 years, serving as president for the last 10 of those years, while simultaneously working as a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice.

Other roles that Dr. Oakes held over the course of her career include reviewer for the American Psychological Association's Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS), consultant to Oklahoma City Public Schools, and leader of group therapy sessions at Asbury Methodist and Westminster Presbyterian Churches. She is a past member of the Oklahoma State Board of Examiners of Psychologists and a past president of the Oklahoma Psychological Association; the latter organization's executive committee named Dr. Oakes a Pioneer Psychologist of Oklahoma in 1998.

Furthermore, Dr. Oakes spent many years as a speaker for the Oklahoma County Mental Health Association's Annual Worry Clinic at St. Luke's Church in Oklahoma City. She was a workshop conductor on Shame & Sexuality at the Zurik Jungian Institute's winter seminar in 1992, and attended the Europe'en Congre's de Gestalt The'rapie in Paris the same year. Dr. Oakes has utilized her expertise to contribute articles to professional journals as well.

Though she is now retired, Dr. Oakes has remained active for the past two years as a consultant for a nonprofit organization known as the Emergency Responder Assistance Program. She has also been a member of a tai chi group for 12 years, and has taught tai chi to priests in a monastery. Looking forward, Dr. Oakes intends to write two books. Her hobbies include traveling, poetry, art, photography, and walking.

Dr. Oakes' accomplishments have been featured in the 15th through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World, the 26th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and the 16th through 28th editions of Who's Who of American Women. She has appeared in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
