Accused Miami Cocaine Smuggler Acquitted by Federal Jury

Ramon Sanmartin of Miami was found not guilty by a jury after three day trial in Federal Court in New Bern.



    NEW BERN, NC, March 02, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- RAMON SANMARTIN was named in an Indictment originally filed on November 3, 2015.

SANMARTIN was arrested on August 26, 2015 when he picked up a package sent to him via the United States Postal Service from San Juan, Puerto Rico to a Days Inn hotel in Morrisville, NC. The package was intercepted by Inspectors with the United States Postal Inspection Service, who were able to open the package and find three bricks of cocaine, totaling approximately three kilograms.

Police arranged to have the package delivered to Sanmartin, who was a registered guest at the Days Inn. When Sanmartin took possession of the package, he was arrested. Investigation revealed that Sanmartin, a resident of Miami, had travelled from Miami to Raleigh in the days prior to his arrest.

Sanmartin was represented by Wilmington criminal defense attorney Steve Wright. The trial began on February 22, 2017, and ended late afternoon on Friday, February 24, 2017 with the jury declaring Sanmartin not guilty of conspiracy and posession with intent to distribute 500g or more of cocaine. Sanmartin was freed from Pamlico county jail that same afternoon.
