This Author Wants to Save You from an Irish Tattoo Nightmare

"Irish Gaelic Tattoo Handbook" showcases best - and worst - of Irish tattoos

HALIFAX, NS, March 18, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Does "An bhfuil cead agam dul go dti an leithreas" mean "Always in my heart" or "May I go to the toilet" in Irish? If you don't know the answer, then you may need this book.

The Irish Gaelic Tattoo Handbook from Bradan Press shows readers how to incorporate Irish Gaelic words into a tattoo design that lets them pay tribute to their Irish heritage - and avoid a tattoo nightmare. The real-life mistakes are eye-openers. From "Daddy's girlfriend" instead of "Daddy's little girl," to "free drugging" instead of "drug free," it's all too easy to end up with a bad Irish tattoo that could be the next internet meme.

Author Audrey Nickel, who lives in the Santa Cruz mountains of California, is a fluent Irish speaker. In her 13 years of involvement with Irish she has dealt with numerous tattoo translation requests: "I've seen hundreds of people make expensive and embarrassing mistakes because they didn't understand how complicated translation can be, or because they trusted the wrong source. There is a lot of really bad Irish on the internet. My goal with this book is to help people avoid getting a bad tattoo and enjoy using Irish with confidence, pride, and accuracy."

The handbook offers a glossary of over 400 authentic Irish words, phrases, and sayings which are suitable for gifts, crafts, artwork, and jewelry as well as tattoos. Advice on the Gaelic alphabet, fonts, and symbols is also featured. Different chapters address common misconceptions about translation, Irish language, and Irish symbols (for example, the three-leaf Irish shamrock is not to be confused with the four-leafed clover, which is not an Irish symbol).

Dr. Emily McEwan is the book's editor and president of Bradan Press, a Gaelic publisher in Halifax, Nova Scotia. McEwan says "We are delighted to publish this book in May as a companion to The Scottish Gaelic Tattoo Handbook, published last year. Both books combine popular culture appeal with reliable information about Gaelic languages and cultures."

Bradan Press connects readers worldwide with Gaelic languages and cultures.
