Ecolectro Wins $150,000 Grants For Growth Award for its Innovative Polymer Membranes

Award will enable company to produce low cost, high performance polymers for clean energy technologies

"Our breakthrough technology will enable significant cost reductions in fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies," says CEO Dr. Gabriel G. Rodríguez-Calero.

ITHACA, NY, March 30, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ecolectro is the recipient of $150,000 in funding from the Grants for Growth program, a unique program that innovatives applied research projects between universities and industry to improve business competitiveness and create jobs. Ecolectro will use the funds to commercialize its polymers in hydrogen fuel cells and electrolyzers.

"Our breakthrough technology will enable significant cost reductions in fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies," says CEO Dr. Gabriel G. Rodriguez-Calero. "The Tech Garden and Grants for Growth has allowed us to expand our reach in finding and securing customers."

Ecolectro's membranes eliminate the need for platinum in fuel cells and electrolyzers, which is a big contributor to cost. By developing new technology, the Ecolectro science team will produce hydrogen, fuel cell, electrolyzer and clean energy technologies at low cost and with high performance.

Prof. Hector D. Abruna and Prof. Geoffrey W. Coates from Cornell University advise Ecolectro. In our close association with Cornell and the Grants for Growth award we will be able to hire paid summer student intern(s) to aid us in bringing our products to market. This will increase jobs in New York State and accelerate our developments.

The Grants for Growth program runs out of The Tech Garden business incubator in Syracuse, and is administered by CenterState CEO. The program is funded by Empire State Development, made possible by the support of New York State Senator John A. DeFrancisco. Companies can apply for the award in one of two categories based on their growth stage: $25,000 Proof of Concept grants for early-stage companies, and $150,000 Concept to Marketplace investments for later-stage companies.

About Ecolectro: Ecolectro develops structurally robust and highly conductive polymer membranes for a range of applications, including electrolysis and fuel cell systems that not only improve performance but also dramatically decrease costs. Ecolectro's alkaline exchange membranes (AEM) enable the replacement of platinum catalysts with non-precious metal alternatives within electrolyzer and fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies. Fuel cells and electrolyzers manufactured using this technology can be potentially produced at half the cost of current state-of-the-art systems while promising to double durability.
