Isidore Cohn, Jr., MD, Remembered for Excellence in Surgery and Medical Education

Dr. Isidore Cohn made a lasting impact on generations of surgeons, and his research was a catalyst for how Louisiana State University of Medicine conducts its research today



    METAIRE, LA, March 30, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Isidore Cohn, Jr. has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Prior to his passing in October 2015, Isidore Cohn, Jr. had built a life filled with professional and personal accomplishments. The son of Isidore and Elsie Cohn, he was born in New Orleans, La. on September 25, 1921. In 1942, he graduated with honors from Tulane University in New Orleans with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. He then pursued a medical career in earnest, obtaining an MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1945. Dr. Cohn continued his medical education through an internship, residency in surgery, and fellowship in surgical research at the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate Hospital. He also earned a Master of Medical Science in surgery and a Diploma in Medicine and Surgery (DMS) from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Cohn returned to New Orleans in 1962 to work in his father's surgical practice but Dr. Rives, Chief of Surgery at LSU asked him to join his teaching staff. Dr. Cohn remained affiliated with LSU and when Dr. Rives retired many years later, Dr. Cohn was named Chief of Surgery at LSU and Chief of Surgery at Charity Hospital. In 2000, he assumed the title of emeritus chairman and professor of surgery.

In these roles, he influenced thousands of medical learners. More than 300 surgical residents completed their training under Dr. Cohn. The James D. Rives Surgical Society, which was subsequently renamed the Isidore Cohn Jr.-James D. Rives Surgical Society after the Society supported the Chair and Learning Center, raised money to establish the first $1 million endowed chair. The Isidore Cohn, Jr., MD, Professor and Chair position was formally established in 1989. This society spearheaded the development of the Isidore Cohn, Jr., MD, Student Learning Center, which continues to function as a state-of-the-art surgical training facility.

Dr. Cohn was involved with numerous professional associations over the course of his career. A diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, he served on the organization's board of directors from 1969 to 1975. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as the First Vice President from 1993-94, a Fellow of the Southern Surgical Association, and was President in 1982-83. His further professional affiliations included the American Medical Association, the American Surgical Association, the Society of University Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, and more. Dr. Cohn also served as a member of the editorial board for several medical journals and publications, including the American Journal of Surgery, The American Surgeon, Current Surgery, Digestive Diseases and Sciences, and Surgical Gastroenterology. Dr. Cohn was Chairman of the National Committee of Pancreatic Cancer. He was the author of numerous books and 358 scholarly, peer-edited articles. He also was a noted lecturer.

Aside from his professional endeavors, Dr. Cohn was an honorary life member of the New Orleans Museum of Art, where he served on the board of directors for five years. He was also a board member of the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau from 1998 to 2000, and a board member for the Jewish Endowment Foundation from 2006 to 2012. Dr. Cohn served as a captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947. He and his wife, Marianne, were married in 1976. Dr. Cohn is also survived by two children from his first marriage, as well as 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

An avid art collector, Dr. Cohn was noted as having assembled one of the best collections of Steuben glass in the world. He served on the board of the New Orleans Museum of Art and arranged exhibitions for his crystal and Chinese jade collections in 2004 and 2013-2014, respectively. For his generosity, Dr. Cohn was honored with the coveted Issac Delgado Award from the museum. Both Dr. Cohn and his wife Marianne received the Tzedakah Award and the Arts Council Award.

Dr. Cohn's efforts over the course of his life were recognized with a number of formal honors and awards. These include a Spirit of Charity Award from the Medical Center of Louisiana in 2003, a Tzedakah Award from the Jewish Endowment Foundation in 2009, an Isaac Delgado Memorial Award from the New Orleans Museum of Art in 2012, and a Chairman Award from the Arts Council of New Orleans in 2012. In 2005, he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Cohn was featured in Volume 26 of Who Was Who in America, the 44th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 7th and 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, 5 editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, 6 editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, the 22nd through 42 editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and 12 editions of Who's Who in the World.

His article and lecture manuscripts and visual aids, notes, correspondence, financial papers, legal documents, printed material, plats, and photographs documenting Isidore Cohn's activities and associations as a New Orleans surgeon, medical educator, and community leader are held in the LSU Libraries.
