Alan Charles Kohn Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Mr. Kohn has devoted his life to legal practice in the Missouri area, specializing in legal and accounting malpractice defense, class action defense, and appellate practice, as well as litigation for antitrust, securities, and RICO cases. From his start as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Security Agency to founding partner of the law firm of Kohn, Shands, Elbert, Gianoulakis & Gilijum, he has tried over 100 cases, argued over 80 appeals, and mediated a settlement of 380 dioxin cases filed in the Circuit Court of the City of St. Louis. Today, he serves as of counsel for Sher Corwin Winters.

Mr. Kohn grew up and attended public schools in the University City suburb of St. Louis. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree from nearby Washington University, earning a place in Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma. Mr. Kohn spent his graduate school days as editor-in-chief of the Washington University Law Review, and was elected to the Order of the Coif before earning a law degree there. He was commissioned as a first post was first lieutenant with the U.S. Army Security Agency, working in the U.S. and Germany in communications and the defense of court-martial cases. His success was recognized, and he earned a position as a law clerk with associate justice Charles E. Whittaker of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1957.

Mr. Kohn's heart was still in St. Louis, however. He returned as an associate to his father, William Kohn, and later in the firm of Coburn & Croft before becoming a partner there in 1962, changing the name to Coburn, Croft & Kohn. In 1970, he became a founding member and partner of Kohn, Shands, Elbert, Gianoulakis & Gilijum. He led the firm for over 40 years, finally accepting a position as of counsel for Sher Corwin Winters in 2014. He has acted as neutral arbitrator and as a mediator in business disputes, and was a court-appointed settlement master for the City of St. Louis.

Mr. Kohn was also a member of the Missouri Board of Law Examiners, serving as president from 1975 to 1979. He was a member of the U.S. District Court Missouri Board of Admissions, serving as chairman from 1970 to 1972, and served on the federal practice committee for the U.S. District Court Missouri from 1987 to 2003. He is affiliated with several legal societies, including as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Bar Foundation, as well as an advocate with the American Board of Trial Advocates. He has also served as an adjunct professor for his alma mater, contributed to many law publications, and served as a faculty member for the Advanced Trial Advocacy Program presented by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. Mr. Kohn has been included in multiple volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in the World.

The prolific Mr. Kohn has also devoted himself to public service, acting as chair for the Missouri Housing Development Committee and as treasurer for the University City Board of Education. He has three children, and loves to play tennis. He has won gold medals in doubles and bronze medals in singles in the United States National Senior Olympics.
