He has also focused his practice on peripheral arterial disease, stroke, heart failure, valvular heart disease, atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and lipid disorders.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Aronow has authored or co-authored more than 1,594 papers, 475 commentaries and 1,074 abstracts in his fields of expertise. Additionally, he has served as a presenter or co-presenter at more than 1,400 talks at meetings. A recognized authority in his fields of expertise, Dr. Aronow has been a member of 160 editorial boards of medical journals, editor-in-chief of four journals, co-editor of two journals, deputy editor of one journal, executive editor of two journals, associate editor of nine journals and guest editor for seven other medical journals. At the present moment, he is editing his sixteenth book, the sixth edition of "Cardiovascular Disease in the Elderly."
In recognition of his commitment to health care, medical research and education, Dr. Aronow has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. He has received numerous awards for teaching and research, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Geriatric Cardiology in 2003, Joseph T. Freeman Award from the GSA in 2005, Walter Bleifeld Memorial Award for distinguished contributions to clinical research from the International Academy of Cardiology in 2010, and a Distinguished Fellowship Award from the International Academy of Cardiology in 2012.
Dr. Aronow is a recognized fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, American Society of Preventative Cardiology, American Geriatrics Society and Gerontological Society of America. In previous positions, he served as a member of national committees and as a reviewer of national guidelines. Dr. Aronow is credited as the co-author of the 2010 American Medical Directors Association guidelines for heart failure, co-chair and first author of the ACC/AHA expert consensus document on hypertension in the elderly, and co-author of the 2015 AHA/ACC/ASH scientific statement on treatment of hypertension in patients with coronary artery disease. He is currently a member of the writing group of the 2017 ACC/AHA/AAPA/ABC/ACPM/AGS/APhA/ASH/ASPC/NMA/PCNA guidelines for the management of patients with hypertension, which will be published in 2017.
Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Aronow attended Queens College, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1953. He went on to complete an MD at Harvard University in 1957, as well as an internship and residency at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center between 1957 and 1961. Certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Aronow served to the rank of captain with the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
