A world-renowned embryologist and tenured professor of anatomy Dr. Young has spent the bulk of his academic career at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, GA. After teaching for a year as an instructor of biochemistry at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, he was then hired as an assistant professor of anatomy at Mercer in 1988. He served as an assistant professor of anatomy from 1988 to 1994, an assistant professor of surgery from 1988 to 1994, a tenured associate professor of anatomy from 1995 to 2003, an associate professor of pediatrics from 1995 to 2003, a tenured professor of anatomy from 2004 to 2016, a professor of pediatrics from 2004 to 2012, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology from 2008 to 2012, and a professor of anesthesiology from 2008 to 2012.

Dr. Young earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1974 from Ohio State University, A Master of Science in Zoology in 1977 at the University of Arkansas, and a PhD in Anatomy in 1983 at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in carbohydrate biochemistry with the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America between 1983 and 1985 as well as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship in developmental biology and carbohydrate biochemistry between 1985 and 1987, both at Case Western University.

A senior fellow of New Westminster College, where he is dedicated to supporting the highest standards of academic excellence, Dr. Young is also a member of Gold Humanism Honor Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, International Cellular Medicine Society, International Society for Stem Cell Research, Advances in Stem Cell Discoveries Society, Regenerative Medicine Forum, Foundation of Accreditation for Cellular Therapy, ResearchGate and LinkedIn. His stem cell research was profiled on All Things Considered with National Public Radio. He has authored dozens of papers throughout his career and has been the recipient of several awards, including a 2009 International Einstein Iconic Achievement Award, a 2005 Humanism in Medicine Award by the Arnold P.
