Greece: An Adventure Traveler's Paradise

Greece's Mixture of Mild climate, Mountains and Seas Makes It One of the Best Countries for Adventure Year-Round

NEW YORK, NY, November 20, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Greek Islands are paradise for adventurous travelers. Ranked #5 on US News & World Report's list for "Best Countries for Adventure," Greece boasts stunning destinations for hiking, rock climbing, kite surfing, sailing, and diving.

"Greece as an adventure traveler's paradise is still one of our best-kept secrets," said Grigoria Kamaterou, Director North America, Greece National Tourism Organization (GNTO). "With such a wide variety and landscapes to choose from, the options are endless."

Five Must-Experience Greece Adventures:

- Hiking in Halkidiki - Part of Northern mainland Greece, these beautiful peninsulas jutting out into the Aegean boast mountain ranges, wetlands, conservation areas, forests and stunning coastline dotted with tiny islands, inlets and deserted coves. There's a cavern system with the accessible Petralona Cave to visit, as well as waterfalls, thermal springs and mountain trails to explore on foot.

- Rock Climbing in Kalymnos - Kalymnos, a tiny island in southeast Greece, is a rock climbing mecca with everything a traveling climber looks for: abundance of challenging rock formations but also simplicity and authenticity, as well as gorgeous vistas. The island provides a huge range of climbing on slabs, big walls, overhangs, and tufas to suit every level and style, all year-round.

- Kitesurfing in Rhodes - With 300 days of sunshine per year and strong side winds, Rhodes is among the best Greek islands for kitesurfing. Theologos Beach, close to the airport of Rhodes, is fantastic for kiters of all levels, as the conditions allow them to jump many feet off the water. Other Rhodes kitesurfing spots are Prasonisi and Ixia, where the clear shoreline makes water sports learning fun and easy.

- Sailing through the Cyclades - Sailing in Greece can be the sail of one's lifetime. The islands are filled with ancient ruins, quaint and historic towns, beautiful beaches with sands in many colors and secluded coves. The journey through the marvelous islands of the Cyclades is illuminated by the blue and white colors of the Aegean. According to the ancient myth, it is Poseidon, god of the sea, who created the island complex that is now one of the most famous worldwide. The Cycladic islands charm and challenge all sea lovers, powered by "meltemi," the strong Cycladic winds.

- Diving in Kea - The crystal blue seas, the endless coastline, the thousands of islands and islets, the 2000 diving points, the 150 known shipwrecks, the countless sea caves, and the clear and relatively warm waters make Greece a unique international diving destination. For the most elite divers, the wreck of the HMHS Britannic, sister ship to the Titanic, in Kea's waters is an option with advanced permission from the Greek government.

Plus, many of the islands have it all, like Naxos, a favorite of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, that boasts hiking, horseback riding, biking, kitesurfing, sailing, diving and, of course, swimming. While blessed with mountains and valleys, the beach is never far off on Naxos.
