Mysen, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. A senior scientist in the Geophysical Laboratory at the Carnegie Institution for Science, Dr. Mysen has been employed with the non-profit organization since 1977. Headquartered in Washington, DC, they are an endowed, independent organization that was originally founded as a place for scientific discovery in 1902. Consisting of leaders in the fields of plant biology, developmental biology, earth and planetary sciences, astronomy, and global ecology, Dr. Mysen is one of many outstanding scientists that are working to make substantial discoveries in their fields of expertise.

Dr. Mysen first earned a BS and Master's degree at the University of Oslo, followed by a PhD at Pennsylvania State University in 1974. He then became a fellow at the Carnegie Institution for Science from 1974 to 1977, before accepting a full-time position. He also lectured for a year in the mid-1970s at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, was a visiting scientist at Bayerisches Geoinstitut, a visiting professor at the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris and the Tohoku University, and a visiting research scholar at the University of Okayama in Japan.

The author of the book "Structure and Properties of Silicate Melts," Dr. Mysen also served as a contributing editor and general editor for the "Phase Diagrams for Ceramists," published through the American Ceramic Society, served as an associate editor and editor for several other publications, and contributed more than 270 articles to professional journals regarding his research. Furthermore, Dr. Mysen has been affiliated as a member of the National Research Council fellowship review panel, the National Science Foundation review panel, the AGU budget and planning committee, and the MSA tellers' committee.

An elected fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America, the Geochemical Society where he earned a F.W. Clarke Medal in 1977, the European Association of Geochemistry, and the Japan Geoscience Union, Dr. Mysen is also a longtime member of the American Geophysical Union, the European Geochemical Society, and The Royal Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Notably, he has been awarded with a Reusch Medal by the Norwegian Geological Society and a George W. Morey Award by the American Ceramic Society.

Born in Norway, Dr. Mysen relocated to the United States in 1971. Soon thereafter, he married Susana Laya in 1975, and had two children. He has been included in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
