A professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Dr. Casperson was a dedicated instructor who enjoyed a 39-year long career in academia. Teaching and chairing the department for six years, he formerly taught at Portland State University for 21 years and at the University of California, Los Angeles, for 12 years. Additionally, Dr. Casperson spent years as a consultant in the aerospace and electronic industries throughout Los Angeles and Portland, OR.
The recipient of a Faculty Excellence Award by the Oregon State Legislature in 1986 and a Branford Price Millar Award for Faculty Excellence by Portland State University in 1993, Dr. Casperson also served as a visiting professor in the department of physics at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, as well as at the University of Otago in New Zealand and the University of Rochester in New York.
Responsible for the experimental discovery and theoretical explanation of the first semiclassical laser instability, Dr. Casperson also constructed several novel laser and waveguide designs and theoretical methods for laser analysis and synthesis during his tenure. A patentee in his field, he has also authored more than 200 articles for scholarly journals in his area of expertise.
Dr. Casperson holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering and physics from California Institute of Technology. He is an elected fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, where he was the recipient of a Centennial Medal in 1984, the Optical Society of America and the American Physical Society, where he was a Distinguished Travelling Lecturer in the division of laser science between 1998 and 2006.
Married to Susan Diane Lunnam since 1974 with four children and eight grandchildren, Dr. Casperson enjoys writing Bible-related books and travelling in his retirement. Notably, he has been cited in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Finance and Business.
