He attributes his successes to his ability to write about unusual subjects in such a way that others are able to understand them. Consequently, this is exactly what he did in his best known book, "The Tao of Pooh," which was on the New York Times' Bestseller List for 49 weeks and its successor, "The Te of Piglet," which was on the New York Times' Bestseller List for 59 weeks. These books were lauded for their unique explanations of Taoist beliefs and writings through A.A. Milne's characters from "Winnie the Pooh." The books are still used today in high school and college classrooms for a range of subjects including science, business, philosophy, literature and world culture. Additionally, as a testament to their mainstream popularity, "The Tao of Pooh" was featured as the subject of a TV Guide crossword puzzle, and "The Te of Piglet" was the subject of a question on the popular television show "Jeopardy." Mr. Hoff also authored "The Singing Creek Where the Willows Grow: The Mystical Nature Diary of Opal Whiteley," the biography of fellow Oregon author and nature writer, Opal Whiteley, which features her childhood diary. Growing up in a family of artists, engineers and explorers, Mr. Hoff also studied architecture, music, fine arts, graphic design and Asian culture. Professionally, he has held an eclectic range of positions as an investigative photojournalist, a tree pruner, a songwriter, a recording musician and a singer. He was also the lead guitarist in two rock 'n' roll bands, United Travel Service and The Redondos. Through all of this, however, he was always a writer, having developed an initial affinity while writing for his school newsletter in the third grade. Today, Mr. Hoff spends his time designing a line of solid-body electric guitars.
