Janet Elaine Olson West Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A retired elementary school educator of 34 years, Janet Elaine Olson West concluded her career in 2009 as an elementary classroom teacher at Kingsville R-I School.

A retired elementary school educator of 34 years, Ms. Olson West concluded her career in 2009 as an elementary classroom teacher at Kingsville R-I School. She started teaching at Lakeland R-3 School in Deepwater and Lowry City, MO for 3 years. She then taught various grades at Kingsville for 31 years. When asked which was her favorite, she says they were all wonderful! Most proud to have been able to witness what her former students have achieved over the years, Ms. Olson West says that she loves running into them, catching up and seeing how well their lives have progressed. A well-liked teacher in the community, she was honored in 2007 with the Above and Beyond Award from Kingsville R-I School District. Ms. Olson West holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Central Missouri State University (now University of Central Missouri) graduating in 1973 and has furthered her education with many, many post graduate classes.

Ms. Olson West has been a longtime member of Missouri National Education Association and now belongs to MNEA-Retired. She is proud to have served on the Retired Executive Council for several years. While still teaching, she held offices in the local Kingsville MNEA including secretary and president. She also served as the secretary of the West Central District for MNEA.

As a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International, Ms. Olson West is an active member having held the offices of secretary and president of her local chapter, Mu. She has been awarded the You Showed Us Award and the Excellence in Education Award from DKG.

In 2014 Ms. Olson West joined the Gilead Rupe Chapter of the Missouri State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She has served as recording secretary and is currently the chaplain of Gilead Rupe Chapter.

Ms. Olson West is proud to have served on the Trails Regional Library Board for 2 terms from 2008 to 2016. Trails Regional has branches in Johnson and Lafayette Counties in Missouri. On her retirement from the board, she was very honored to be presented with a Resolution from both Missouri State Representative Denny Hoskins and Missouri State Senator David Pearce for her service on the library board.

Church is very important to Ms. Olson West. She is a member and holds the office of Deacon in the Community of Christ Church. She is active in the Holden congregation, teaching the pre-school Sunday School Class and serving on the building committee.

Beginning in 2001 Ms. Olson West started volunteering at Powell Gardens. She has helped with classes, read stories to the children, painted, and many other jobs. She enjoys her work there. She also served as a member of the Education Advisory Committee.

Another committee that Ms. Olson West serves on is the Holden Passion for the Cure, Breast Cancer Awareness. Each October they host an afternoon of education, fellowship, and celebration. They are proud to raise funds to help community members that are dealing with cancer.

Not long after her retirement from teaching, Ms. Olson West was asked to help out at the Holden Senior Center, Care Connection. Since then she has become part of the team that bakes approximately 100 dozen cinnamon rolls on the second Friday of the month, September thru May. The money raised helps support the hot meal program. She has also joined the team that takes turns delivering meals around town.

Ms. Olson West has been married to Albert Newton West for nearly 50 years. They are the proud parents of two children, James and Sarah and the proud grandparents of three grandsons, Benjamin, Logan and Landon.

Ms. Olson West has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who of American Women.
