With more than 50 years of practiced experience to his credit, Dr. Nichols serves as professor of microbiology and immunology with Tulane University School of Medicine, where he also holds the role of William Henderson emeritus professor of surgery. At the start of his career, after completing an internship and residency with the University of Illinois Hospital, he began at the university as an instructor of surgery and assistant professor of surgery. Over the years, he has honed his expertise in medicine and education through his positions with the Chicago Medical School, the Medical Center of Louisiana, and the Tulane University School of Medicine. A former major in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army Reserves, he has also served as a surgical consultant for numerous VA hospitals and many pharmaceutical companies, and as a surgeon on the Board of Directors for the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, where he stayed for 20 years, and was President from 1999 to 2001. One of the highlights of his career was developing with colleagues the Nichols bowl prep that still is used today.
A diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Nichols holds a Master of Science and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he has maintained Fellowship status with medical organizations such as the American Academy of Microbiology, the American College of Surgeons, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, as well as membership in the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, the Association of VA Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, in addition to many others. Throughout his life, he made it a point to further his education through board positions with these organizations.
Utilizing the plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Nichols has authored books with other scholars in the field including the "Manual of Surgical Infection," "Decision Making in Surgical Sepsis" and "Surgical Sepsis 1993 and Beyond." For his professional accomplishments, he has been recognized with the Douglas Stubbs Lecturer Award from the National Medical Association's Surgical Section, the Professor of the Year Award from Chicago Medical School and the Clinical Professor of the Year Award from Tulane University on many occasions. Additionally, he has been featured in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World.
