At the age of 16, he made the early decision to concentrate on a career in medicine. He now holds several academic degrees including a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College and a Doctor of Medicine from Weill Cornell Medicine at Cornell University.

In addition, Dr. Borer received his training in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, his cardiology training in the Cardiology Branch of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, and spent a year as a Senior Fulbright Hays Scholar and Glorney-Raisbeck Fellow in the Medical Sciences at Guy's Hospital of the University of London. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and of the Subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Disease. He is also certified in nuclear cardiology through the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology on which he was a founding trustee. Dr. Borer currently holds a medical license in New York.

Dr. Borer draws on his professional and academic qualifications and decades of experience in his current position as professor of medicine, cell biology, radiology, public health, and surgery at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He is also an adjunct professor of cardiovascular medicine in cardiothoracic surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, where for 30 years he was the Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Cardiovascular Pathophysiology before moving primarily to Downstate. He is also chairman of the Howard Gilman Institute for Heart Valve Disease and the Schiavone Cardiovascular Translational Research Institute at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, having previously served for several years as Chairman of Medicine and Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. Borer's recent investigations center on the cellular and molecular bases of heart failure in regurgitant valvular diseases, a novel therapy to prevent cardiac fibrosis and the study of heart rate slowing treatment for heart failure.

Through years of hard work and dedication, Dr. Borer has received national and international recognition for his influential contributions to his field. Most notably, he is credited with the conception and development of radionuclide cineangiography during exercise, which significantly altered the practice of cardiology. He also established the benefits of nitroglycerin during heart attacks, and holds a patent for co-inventing a method for inhibiting fibroblast growth and cardiac fibrosis. During his medical school studies, he was one of 20 students selected as the first student representatives to the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges and was selected into Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor society of American medical schools, in his junior year. In addition, Dr. Borer is proud to have served for the past 41 years on FDA Advisory Committees, several of which he has chaired. For his renowned accomplishments in cardiology, Dr. Borer has been named among the Top 1 Percent of Physicians by U.S. News & World Report L.P. As a talented medical professional, he has received countless awards and honors from prestigious organizations in his field. Most recently, he received the Award for Lifetime Achievement in Heart Valve Diseases from the Heart Valve Society, the Legend of Cardiology Award at the 10th Annual Global Summit (C3) on Complex Cardiovascular Catheter Therapeutics, the Public Service Medal of NASA, and the Kanu Chatterjee Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Academy of Cardiology for Contributions to Cardiovascular Medicine.. Dr. Borer has also been a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in Cardiovascular Disease for 23 years.

In order to stay abreast of developments in his field, Dr. Borer serves on the board of trustees of The Heart Valve Society, and is a fellow of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences, of the American College of Cardiology and of the American Heart Association. Additionally, he has maintained affiliation with countless industry organizations, associations, committees, and societies throughout his prolific career.
