Located across the street from Saint Joseph's Hospital, he formerly served in the same capacity at The Center of Restorative Spine Surgery in Saint Paul between 2004 and 2010, the Institute of Low Back and Neck Care from 1981 to 2004 and the Low Back Clinic at the Sister Kenny Institute from 1978 to 1981. A world-renowned expert in spinal care and a pioneer in the pursuit of adhesive arachnoiditis awareness in the medical community, Dr. Burton boasts extensive expertise in the treatment of complex spinal problems.

A lecturer and publisher in his field, Dr. Burton is the editor of the "The Burton Report ®" and editor-in-chief of www.burtonreport.com. Bringing credible, worldwide awareness to light, "The Burton Report ®" is an independent and non-commercial internet journal that was first published on January 1, 2000, and is dedicated to the principle that healthcare and the healthcare process must reflect truth and integrity as well as the best interests of the patient. A former editor of the Neuroorthopedics Journal, Dr. Burton has authored and co-authored more than 100 medical and scientific papers and books throughout his career, as well as numerous internet communications.

Dr. Burton's career history also included serving as the director of the department of neuroaugmentive surgery at Sister Kenny Institute in Minneapolis, neurological research coordinator at Temple University Health Sciences Center, visiting research affiliate at Primate Center at the University of Washington and associate chief of surgery turned chief of neurosurgery at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Seattle. He also taught as an assistant and associate professor of neurosurgery at Temple University Health Sciences Center in Philadelphia. Additionally, he has served with a number of organizations, including as the chairman of the advisory panel on neurologic devices for the Food and Drug Administration and as co-chairman of the American Board of Spine Surgery. An elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons, where he formerly served on the executive committee of the Minnesota chapter, Dr. Burton currently serves as a board member for the Association for Medical Ethics in the U.S. since 2018.

Responsible for numerous patents for surgical devices, operating room fiberoptic headlights and clinical therapy systems and techniques, Dr. Burton was a research fellow through the Department of Health and the National Polio Foundation and a neurosurgeon fellow several times through Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as more than 35 editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Burton notably served in the U.S. Navy as a neurosurgeon during Vietnam, for which he was in charge of a Navy unit.

Completing his undergraduate work at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Burton then earned a Doctor of Medicine at New York Medical College in 1960. He completed a surgical internship at Yale University Medical Center, was a fellow and assistant resident in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and chief resident in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Bayview Campus and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Between 1967 and 1969, Dr. Burton is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is board certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Forensic Medicine and the American Board of Spinal Surgery.
