He most recently worked as a consultant for Silex Systems Ltd. in Australia in 2005. Prior to this appointment, he was a technical staff member at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1973 to 1983, where he was also a fellow from 1993 to 2005, and a consultant for numerous other companies such as the U.S. Enrichment Corporation in Australia from 2000 to 2002, Advanced Isotope Technologies, Inc., in Denton, TX, from 1994 to 1995, and AMOCO Corporation in Naperville, IL, from 1985 to 1988. He has also been a visiting professor and scientist at various academic institutions, including the University of New South Wales in Australia in 1987, Bielefeld University in Germany in 1980, and the Max-Planck-Institute for Quantum Optics in Germany in 1982, 1984, and 1990.
Dr. Lyman received a Bachelor of Science in 1968 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1973, both from Brigham Young University. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1970. Before his service, he served as a volunteer missionary with the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints in Canada from 1963 to 1965, in Cambodia from 2006 to 2008, as well as in England and South Africa. He has also been a genealogy consultant in Salt Lake City and an associate member of The Optical Society. He has written one book, "Völkerwanderung: Doesn't Anyone Stay Home? Movements and Migrations of the People Who Became Europeans" in 2017, and he has more than 2,000 citations of papers that he has published.
Dr. Lyman was an STA Fellow of the Science and Technology Agency of Japan in 1997 and a National Defense Education Act Fellow of the U.S. government from 1968 to 1973. He was honored alongside his wife as New Mexico's Parents of the Year in 1997. In addition, he is listed in the 58th and 59th editions of Who's Who in America, as well as the ninth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
