John Charles Eichelberger, Ph.D. has authored some 100 journal articles, including three transformative papers featured on the cover of Nature.

With more than 40 years of experience in volcano research, higher education, and international cooperation to his credit, Dr. Eichelberger has retired from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with recognition as Professor Emeritus of Geology. Previously, he held the positions of Professor of Geology from 1991 to 2007 and 2016 to 2017 and Dean of the Graduate School and Interdisciplinary Studies from 2012 to 2016. During 2007 to 2012 he was Program Coordinator for Volcano Hazards at the U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, Virginia, with responsibility for the nation's volcano observatories. Earlier, he served as a member of technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1979, culminating in recognition as Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in 1988 and Supervisor of the Geochemistry Division in 1990. Dr. Eichelberger began his career in the Volcanology Group of Los Alamos National Laboratories, Los Alamos, New Mexico, as part of the U.S. Government's effort to advance use of geothermal energy.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Eichelberger pursued and education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning Bachelor and Master of Earth Science degrees in 1971. He concluded his formal education at Stanford University, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in Geology in 1974. Dr. Eichelberger remains active in research and affiliated with various professional organizations, including as lifetime member of the American Geophysical Union and a member of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of Earth's Interior.

Beyond his employment positions, Dr. Eichelberger has participated in a number of leadership roles. From 1991 to 2007, he was Volcanology Group Leader at the University of Alaska Fairbanks's Geophysical Institute and Coordinating Scientist of the Alaska Volcano Observatory. While Dean at University of Alaska Fairbanks, he served as Vice President Academic of the University of the Arctic, an international network of nearly 200 universities and institutes concerned with promotion of research and delivery of higher education in the Arctic. Dr. Eichelberger is internationally known as an enthusiastic proponent of scientific drilling. He led the Inyo Domes Scientific Drilling, California, from 1983 to 1988, the Katmai Scientific Drilling Project, Alaska, from 1988 to 1994, the Unzen Scientific Drilling Project, Japan, from 1997 to 2004, and is now developing the Krafla Magma Testbed, Iceland, to achieve his ultimate scientific dream of coring through the margin of an active magma body.

Dr. Eichelberger found much success with his written works as well, having served in editorial capacities on Geoscience, Eos: Transactions of the American Geophysical Union, the Journal of Geophysical Research, and various special journal issues. He has authored some 100 journal articles, including three transformative papers featured on the cover of Nature. He is also editor or co-editor of three books, including an American Geophysical Union Monograph on Kamchatka, Russia.

Additionally, Dr. Eichelberger founded several organizations on themes of natural hazards and international scientific diplomacy. With colleagues from the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Kamchatka, Russia and the University of Hokkaido, Japan he founded and led the Japan Kamchatka Alaska Subduction Processes Group since 1998, the International Volcanological Field School since 2002, and the Natural Hazards Sub-Group under the U.S.-Russia Bi-Presidential Commission in 2012 (the latter suspended pending resolution of international disagreements). In 2014, he founded the Natural Hazards Thematic Network of the University of the Arctic, which has focused research on ice-jam (breakup) floods. Scientifically, Dr. Eichelberger is best known for transformative discoveries concerning mixing of magmas and degassing of magma.

In light of these undertakings, Dr. Eichelberger has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was named a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and received numerous grant awards from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S. Department of State covering issues of volcanology, Arctic floods, international cooperation in research and education, and geothermal energy. He received the Usibelli Research Award from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2005 and the Sergey Soloviev Medal from the Natural Hazards Division of the European Geosciences Union in 2015. Dr. Eichelberger was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the West.
