Likewise, Mr. Brown was an associate attorney at Mayer, Brown & Platt from 1980 to 1984 and McDermott, Will & Emery from 1976 to 1980. He considers the highlight of his career to be the clients and professionals he has worked with on all of the transactions throughout his career. He began this career when the Employee Income Security Act of 1974 ("ERISA") presented him with an opportunity to represent employee benefits and executive compensation.
Mr. Brown's academic pursuits began at the University of Kentucky where he earned a Bachelor of Science in business and economics in 1973. He continued his studies at the University of Illinois where he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1976. In addition, he received bar certification in Illinois in 1976. Working on an investment-based Stock Ownership Plan helped him begin his work in the employee ownership field.
As an active professional in the community, Mr. Brown is a member of The ESOP Association, where he was a board member and the chair of legislation and regulatory advancement for the Employee Stock Ownership Plan Association from 1997 to 1999. He also is a member of the tax law section of the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel and the International Pension and Employee Benefit Lawyers Association.
Furthermore, Mr. Brown is a former member of the Chicago Bar Association, where he was the chairman of the employee benefits committee from 1988 to 1989. He also held membership in the National Center for Employee Ownership and the Employee-Owned Corporations of America.
Throughout his career, Mr. Brown has been a contributing author for The Handbook of Employee Ownership Plans in 2005. In addition to being named to Best Lawyers in America from 1998-2019, he has also been recognized by Human Resources Executive Top Employment Lawyers 2012-2017, and Chamber USA – America's Leader Lawyers guide, Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation 2007-2018. Mr. Brown has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the Word.
