Joseph G. Gall is the former president of the Society for Developmental Biology and the American Society for Cell Biology.

With more than 65 years of professional experience, Dr. Gall has been a member of the Carnegie Institution department of embryology since 1983, also serving as American Cancer Society professor of developmental genetics for the school since 1984. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a professor of biology and molecular biophysics at Yale University from 1963 to 1983. Earlier in his career, Dr. Gall was a professor and member of the faculty of the University of Minnesota from 1952 to 1963.

Dr. Gall began his career as a student at Yale University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in zoology in 1949 and earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1952. An active leader in his community, he is the former president of the Society for Developmental Biology and the American Society for Cell Biology. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Genetics Society of America, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Dr. Gall is the former chair of the National Institutes of Health biological study section and the board of science counselors.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gall has been recognized for his contributions. He received the Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Developmental Biology, and the E.B. Wilson Award from the American Society for Cell Biology. The recipient of the V.D. Mattia Award from the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, he was awarded the Wilbur Cross Medal by Yale University, the Lasker-Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science from the Lasker Foundation, and the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University.

Dr. Gall has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
