Dr. John E. Hearst has been recognized as scientific advisory board member emeritus of Aduro Biotech, Inc., since 2008.

With more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Hearst has been recognized as scientific advisory board member emeritus of Aduro Biotech, Inc., since 2008, having been a member of the scientific advisory board of Oncologics, Inc., from 2007 to 2008. Prior to obtaining these positions, he was the founder, director, consultant and vice president of the Cerus Corporation from 1992 to 2006, the founder and director of Steritech, Inc., from 1992 to 1996, founder and senior consultant with Advanced Genetics Research, Inc., from 1981 to 1984, and founder and director of HRI Research, Inc., from 1978 to 1992.

In addition to his work in the field, Dr. Hearst held a number of academic positions. He has been recognized as an honorary professor of Qingdao University since 2008, as well as professor emeritus of the University of California, Berkeley, since 1996. He was a faculty chemist with the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory from 2000 to 2008, having been senior research scientist from 1980 to 1999 and director of the division of chemical biodynamics from 1986 to 1989. Dr. Hearst was a professor of chemistry with the University of California, Berkeley, from 1962 to 1995.

Dr. Hearst began his career as a student at Yale University, obtaining a Bachelor of Engineering in 1957. He continued his studies at the California Institute of Technology, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1961. He subsequently served as a postdoctoral researcher with Dartmouth College until 1962. He also holds an honorary Doctor of Science from Lehigh University, which he received in 1992.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Hearst has been active with a number of organizations. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Biophysical Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Society for Photobiology and the American Physical Society. He has been recognized as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hearst has been recognized for his contributions, having been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
