A highly esteemed conductor and educator with nearly 50 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Cox is currently retired, having most recently served as a professor of music and graduate coordinator at the University of Maine, a position he held from 1978 until reaching emeritus status in 2014. Prior to this appointment, he held the post of assistant professor of music at Salem University from 1968 to 1975. Dr. Cox began his career as a vocal music instructor, first at Superior High School and then Casey Junior High School.

Dr. Cox earned a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Nebraska in 1965, Master of Music from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1969, and Master of Arts from West Virginia University in 1974. He completed his studies by receiving a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1978.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Cox has been a judge for the Heritage Festivals since 1982 and served as a freelance conductor in the United States and abroad since 1978. Some of his career highlights include conducting Mozart's "Coronation Mass," Haydn's "Lord Nelson Mass," Faure's "Requiem Mass," and Vaughan Williams' "Toward the Unknown Region," at Carnegie Hall.

Dr. Cox is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Music Educators National Conference, the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Educators of America Award in 1974, Vincent Hartgen Award from the University of Maine's Patrons of the Arts in 2000, and Black Bear Award from the University of Maine Alumni Association in 2001. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Cox was selected for inclusion in the 61st edition of Who's Who in America.
