Professor Jagdish Narayan Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Prof. Narayan has worked as a distinguished university professor of materials science and engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, for the last 34 years. He began his professional career as a group leader of the Solid State Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN, from 1971 to 1984, and later became the director of the Division of Materials Research at the National Science Foundation in Washington, DC, for two years. During this time, he has also served as the foundation's major facilities reviewer and on the technical advisory board of the Kopin Corporation in Taunton, MA, since 1988. In addition, he served as the director of the Microelectronic Center in the 1980s and was president of the board of trustees for the Hindi Vikas Mandal in 1990, both in Raleigh, NC.

A native of Kanpur, India, Prof. Narayan earned a Bachelor of Science in materials science with the highest honors from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1969. After immigrating to the United States that same year, he went on to obtain a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley, both in materials science and engineering. Since graduating, he has received several fellowships, including one from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and has been affiliated with a number of organizations related to his field, such as the American Physical Society, the National Academy of Sciences, India, the ASM International, and the Materials Research Society, among others. He is a Life Member of the National Academy of Engineering, Life Fellow of the National Academy of Inventions, and Life Fellow of the National Academy of Science (India), in addition to Fellow Honors.

In partnership with his professional roles, Prof. Narayan has issued 45 patents in the fields of laser processing of materials, high performance ceramics, novel methods of materials synthesis and processing, and laser processing and patterning of diamond films. He has also served as an editor for many scientific papers that include "Defects in Semiconductors," "Laser-Solid Interactions and Transient Thermal Processing of Metals" and "High-Temperature Superconductors," as well as contributed numerous scientific papers to professional journals.

In recognition of his accomplishments, Prof. Narayan has been honored with a large sum of accolades from organizations in his field. He has received Gold Medals from ASM International, formerly known as the American Society for Metals, as well as from Acta Materialia. He was also awarded an Edward DeMille Campbell Lectureship and Prize, an IITK Distinguished Alumnus Award, an Outstanding Sustained Research Award from the U.S. Department of Energy, and a Distinguished Service Award from the National Science Foundation. He is listed in the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 64th edition of Who's Who in America. He currently resides in North Carolina with his wife, Ratna, with whom he has one son named Roger.
