This book is a wonderful educational journey written by someone with Sickle Cell Disease who trained while being sick to become a medical doctor. The author uses humor to tell her story. She shares about many things including making it through school with usual and unusual disability accommodations, natural things and simple techniques you can use to protect your health that are not found in textbooks, her experiences navigating the healthcare system , and even how to attract people to you, to name a few. This is a book that everyone with a chronic illness, or who knows someone with a chronic illness, should have. It is especially crucial for those with Sickle Cell Disease and chronic pain, because it reads like a survivor manual.

Simone said, "I wrote about while being sick and studying to become a medical doctor. Going through school with my disease was a challenge. Many times I could have and thought about quiting, but I made it. I navigated my education and the healthcare system. Now I am sharing my story with you."

Steve Kidd, the Host of Thriving Entrepreneur said, "This powerful story of strength and success in the face of adversity is amazing. Often we don't think about the struggles other people are having with thing we just take for granted."

Dr. Simone Eastman Uwan was born in Guyana South America, and grew up with her young sister and mother until she was 13 years old when she immigrated to the United States in 1984.

She completed her education at Barnard College, Columbia University and attended Stanford University School of Medicine, continuing afterwards at an affiliated Family Practice residency. Her career over the years focused predominantly on caring for the underserved, working mostly in community clinics. She has been married to her husband of 21 years, and they currently live in Orlando, FL. While SickleCell disease has caused an early retirement from her medical practice, Dr. Uwan has chosen to keep her life vibrant by being active and giving in her nondenominational church community, where she also receives tremendous support. She also enjoys writing, counseling women and using social media to make a positive difference. She shows by example that people with chronic pain can still make a powerful impact as she does even from her bedside during her painful health challenges.
