Dr. Deshmukh began his career as a consultant in clinical neurophysiology for the National Health Service in London, England, from 1972 to 1974. Following this opportunity, he held the position of assistant professor of neurology and director of the brain blood flow research laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, from 1974 to 1976. From 1976 to 1978, he worked as assistant professor of neurology with the John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas at Houston, and he contributed to the Florida Neurological Institute in Jacksonville, FL, as a neurologist from 1978 to 1984. After this opportunity, he was active as the director of electroencephalograms and clinical neurophysiology at University of Florida Health, Jacksonville, from 1984 to 1996. During this time, he was also an associate professor and chief of neurology at the University of Florida Health, Jacksonville, from 1994 to 1996. Dr. Deshmukh concluded his career as a neurologist with Neurology Consultants, Inc., in St. Augustine, FL, from 1996 until his retirement in 2007.

Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Deshmukh received a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Pune, now Savitribai Phule Pune University, in Maharashtra, India, in 1962. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Master of Surgery in general surgery from the University of Mumbai in Maharashtra in 1966. He concluded his education with a Doctor of Philosophy in medicine from the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 1972. Dr. Deshmukh was certified in general surgery as a fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1966 and was additionally certified in electroencephalograms and clinical neurophysiology by the American Academy of Clinical Neurophysiology.

In addition to his career, Dr. Deshmukh is an author, poet, photographer, painter and public speaker. He contributed to the Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine as a poet, photographer and public speaker from 2002 to 2007. He has co-authored several books, including "Noninvasive Measurement of Regional Cerebral Blood Flow in Man" in 1978, "Presence: The Key to Mental Excellence" in 1990, and "The Astonishing Brain and Holistic Consciousness" in 2012. He has also authored several books of poetry, including "The Last Leaf: A Collections of Poems & Essays" in 1993, "A Poet's Walk: A Collection of Poems, Essays and Photographs" in 2002, "Poet's Vision" in 2005, and "Natural Bliss: A Collection of Photo-Poems and Essays Inspired by Nature" in 2015. He had an exhibition of photographs and poems on display at the India Art Gallery in Pune, India, and has contributed over 60 scientific articles to professional journals. While Dr. Deshmukh is agnostic in belief himself, he grew up in a Hindu family and has been a student of the Vedanta, Buddhist and Zen philosophies and served as a private teacher of Vedic philosophy in Jacksonville from 1982 to 1996.

Dr. Deshmukh is an associate of the Academy of Neurology. In 1992, he was the recipient of the John A. Beals Award from the Duval County Medical Society. He has also been part of groundbreaking research in the noninvasive measurement of regional cerebral blood flow. Dr. Deshmukh has previously been selected for inclusion in the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America.
