Since 2003, Dr. B. Lawrence Riggs has been Professor Emeritus at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Since 2003, Dr. Riggs has been Professor Emeritus at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Before accepting this post, he served as a professor at the Medical School in Rochester, MN, from 1972 to 2003. Additionally, he was a member of the staff in internal medicine and metabolism at the Mayo Clinic and Foundation in Rochester from 1962 to 2003 and a member of the general medicine B study section of the National Institutes of Health from 1979 to 1982.

At the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, Dr. Riggs was the Chairman of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism from 1974 to 1984 and was the Purvis and Roberta Tabor Professor of Medical Research from 1974 to 2003. Under his chairmanship, the division of endocrinology and metabolism earned the number one ranking in the nation.

At the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Riggs was an associate professor from 1970 to 1972 and a member of the faculty from 1962 to 1974. At the Mayo Clinic and Foundation, he was an assistant to staff in 1961. He also worked as a resident in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education Hospital from 1958 to 1961. He did a general medical internship at the Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, CA, from 1955 to 1956. Aside from his primary endeavors, he served on the national advisory board for the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease with the National Institutes of Health from 1987 to 1991. From there, he was a distinguished investigator at the Mayo Foundation until 2003.

In addition to his extensive professional work, Dr. Riggs has dedicated time over the years to memberships with numerous prestigious organizations, such as the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Additionally, he is a member of the American College of Endocrinology, the Association of American Physicians and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Riggs is a member of the Endocrine Society, which awarded him the Rorer Clinical Investigator Award in 1989. He was also a member of the American Federation for Clinical Research, where he served as Councilor of the Midwest section from 1969 to 1971. With the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, he acted as president from 1985 to 1986 and was honored with the Bartter Clinical Investigation Award in 1990, the Career Recognition Award, the Newman Distinguished Service Award in 2002, and the Rodan Outstanding Mentorship Award in 2005. He also served as councilor of the Central Society of Clinical and Translational Research and was a member of the National Osteoporosis Foundation, which awarded him the Legends in Osteoporosis Award in 2009.

Having always been fond of science and helping people, Dr. Riggs was certain he was meant for a career in medicine. He began his academic pursuits at the University of Arkansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1953, a Bachelor of Science in medicine in 1955, and a Doctor of Medicine in 1955. Soon thereafter, he received a Master of Science in medicine from the University of Minnesota in 1962. Additionally, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Endocrinology and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

For all of his achievements, Dr. Riggs has been recognized with the Postgraduate Travel Award from the Mayo Foundation in 1961, the Kappa Delta Award from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery in 1972, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Arkansas in 1998, and the Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists in 2002. He also received a traveling fellowship from the Royal Society of Medicine in 1973. Moreover, he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus by the Mayo Foundation in 2000.

Dr. Riggs has contributed approximately 555 articles to the Medical Editor. Civically, he served with the Medical Corps Army of the United States from 1956 to 1958. He has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
