Dr. Bukry has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the geology industry

With 35 years of professional experience, Dr. David Bukry has been recognized as a scientist emeritus of the United States Geological Survey since 1996.

REDWOOD CITY, CA, December 19, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present David Bukry, PhD with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Bukry celebrates many years of experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Bukry has been recognized as a scientist emeritus of the United States Geological Survey since 1996. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a geologist with the United States Geological Survey from 1967 to 1996. In addition to his primary responsibilities, he served as a research associate with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, from 1970 to 2003 and a geologist with the Minerals Management Service in the United States Department of the Interior from 1984 to 1986. Earlier in his career, Dr. Bukry excelled as a research assistant with the Mobil Oil Company in 1965 and a geologist with the United States Army Corps of Engineers in 1963.

Dr. Bukry began his career as a student at the Colorado School of Mines, completing coursework from 1959 to 1960. He continued his studies with Johns Hopkins University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. He subsequently graduated from Princeton University, where he earned a Master of Arts in 1965 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967. Dr. Bukry has also completed postgraduate coursework with the University of Illinois and De Anza College.

Dr. Bukry's scientific specialty – ocean nannoplankton biostratigraphy – involved the National Science Foundation (JOIDES) Deep Sea Drilling Project from 1968-1987. He was the onboard nannopaleontologist for 6 legs of the D/V Glomar Challenger (Legs 1, 6, 16, 32, & 63), publishing nannoplankton papers for more than 50 of the first 95 Legs around the world. His biostratigraphic zonation and new species for Cretaceous and Tertiary ocean strata cores provided correlation and continuity between DSDP Legs. His descriptions of 300 new species of calcareous nannoplankton and silicoflagellates have improved the biostratigraphic precision for JOIDES ocean coring since 1968.

This research was applied to coastal onshore biostratigraphy by providing geologic timescales for USGS mapping projects in California, Florida, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington from 1968-2014. These supported plate tectonic and stratigraphic interpretation papers.

Beginning in 1998, Dr. Bukry's studies turned to paleoecology of silicoflagellates for USGS climate change studies along the Pacific Coast from the Gulf of Alaska to the Gulf of California. Cold and warm water species of fossil silicoflagellate floras identified climate events and trends from the late Quaternary and Holocene for comparison to modern climate change conditions.

A respected leader in his field, Dr. Bukry has been an active member of his community. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Geological Society of America, and the American Explorers Club.

He has also maintained involvement with the American Chemical Society, the Paleontology Research Institute, and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Dr. Bukry has been affiliated with the Planetary Society, the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, the International Nanoplankton Association, and the European Union of Geoscientists.

Dr. Bukry has been further active with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club at the University of California San Diego, the Princeton Club of Northern California, and Sigma Xi. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his contributions. Dr. Bukry has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. David Bukry has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
