D. Michael Quinn, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

D. Michael Quinn, Ph.D. was recently honored with a Leonard J. Arrington Lifetime Achievement Award by the Mormon History Association in 2016.

Dr. Quinn is an American historian and former professor at Brigham Young University. Hired in 1976 to teach in the history department as an assistant, then associate professor, he was made full professor in 1984, where he remained until 1988. During his tenure, he also served as director of the graduate history program between 1986 and 1988, and was the associate director for the study abroad program in Vienna during 1983. Focusing much of his effort on the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and on Mormon history, Dr. Quinn was voted Best Professor by the graduating class of 1986.

Between 2005 and 2013, Dr. Quinn served as an external member of the doctoral committee for Texas A&M University's history department. He served as Beinecke fellow and associate professor of history at Yale University in Connecticut during 2002-03, as visiting scholar at the University of Southern California's Center for Feminist Research in Los Angeles, and visiting scholar at the Claremont Graduate School in California in 2000. For a short time prior to beginning his career in academia, Dr. Quinn worked as a research assistant to Leonard J. Arrington, the official LDS Church Historian. He also was a TV documentary consultant between 1990 and 2011, and advisory council member for the Redd Center of Western Studies in Provo, UT, between 1980 and 1986.

Dr. Quinn has published numerous studies on the LDS Church's highest leadership, including his three-volume work of "The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power," "The Mormon Hierarchy: Extensions of Power," and "The Mormon Hierarchy: Wealth and Corporate Power." He also authored the 1996 book "Same-Sex Dynamics Among Nineteenth-Century Americans: A Mormon Example," which argues that homosexuality was common among early Mormons and was not seen as a serious sin or transgression. Furthermore, Dr. Quinn has contributed more than 80 articles to various peer-reviewed journals since 1973. He was notably interviewed in the PBS documentary "The Mormons."

Locally, Dr. Quinn served on the board of trustees for the Leonard J. Arrington Foundation and was a volunteer for the One Institute and Archives. He is a longtime member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Historical Association, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Organization of American Historians, the Mormon History Association, and the Utah State Historical Society. He also served on the awards committee for the Affirmation: Gay and Lesbian Mormons and was on the membership and program committees for the Western History Association.

The recipient of multiple awards during his career, Dr. Quinn was more recently honored with a Leonard J. Arrington Lifetime Achievement Award by the Mormon History Association in 2016, was named Distinguished Historian by the Organization of American Historians in 2004, and received a Service Award from One Institute and Archives through the University of Southern California in 2001. He has received several fellowships and grants as well and has been showcased in the 61st through 63rd editions of Who's Who in America.

Dr. Quinn first earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and philosophy from Brigham Young University in 1968 before serving three years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Returning to college, he completed both a Master of Arts in history at the University of Utah in 1973 and a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in history at Yale University in 1975 and 1976, respectively. He was certified by the Institute of Quantitative History at the Newberry Library in 1982.

Today, Dr. Quinn is the proud father of four and grandfather of two. In his free time, he enjoys practicing photography.
