Effective January 1, 2019, Dr. Herman Berliner will again serve as Hofstra's Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Dr. Berliner earned a Bachelor of Arts from the City College of New York in 1965, following this accomplishment with a Doctor of Philosophy from the City University of New York Graduate Center in 1970 and an honorary doctorate from Hofstra University in 2015. Currently Zarb School of Business Dean at Hofstra University, where he has served in this capacity since 2015 and previously from 1980 to 1989. From 1989 to 2015, Dr. Berliner served Hofstra as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, He commenced his career as an assistant professor of economics at the university in 1970. As his career progressed, Dr. Berliner served Hofstra University as associate dean of advisement, associate provost, dean of the School of Business, provost, dean of faculties and professor of economics and also as the Lawrence Herbert distinguished professor from 1996 to the present time. Effective January 1, 2019, Dr. Berliner will again serve as Hofstra's Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Berliner's decision to pursue administration was influenced by his passion for the formative academic environment. Demonstrating professional versatility, he served on the board of directors and as director of ProjectGrad on Long Island from 2005 to 2014, along with his numerous academic positions. He also served the North Shore School District as board member, vice president and president, and he currently sits on the board of directors for New 42nd Street. Due to his professional knowledgeability, Dr. Berliner has recently contributed to Dean and Provost Journal as well as ESMD Global Magazine, and there was notably a building named in his honor at Hofstra University in 2012.
Celebrated for spending 25 years as the chief academic officer of an institution, Dr. Berliner has honed his skills considerably during his career's duration and is celebrated for his contributions as a higher education economist and an academic leader. In light of his considerable accomplishments, he has been the recipient of a Lisnet Award as well as an Honorary Alumni Award from Hofstra University. Dr. Berliner has been a TIAA fellow of since 2006 and has been honored in an array of professional listings, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
