With more than 55 years of professional experience, Mr. Alpern most recently served as the executive vice president, chief compliance officer, and general counsel with Peter Kimmelman Asset Management LLC from 2002 to 2018, having been special counsel for Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP from 1994 to 2002. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a manager of real estate and facilities planning for Coopers and Lybrand from 1978 to 1988, project manager with Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum, PC, from 1977 to 1978, and director of research for Corporate Planners and Coordinators from 1973 to 1975. From 1972 to 1975, he was vice president and architecture director with Environmental R&D, Inc., and Space Planning and Design, and from 1968 to 1972, he was a project director with Saphier, Lerner, Schindler, Environetics. Earlier in his career, Mr. Alpern was with Haines Lundberg Waehler, Architects, from 1962 to 1967. He continues to serve as an architectural consultant and historian in New York City since 1988.

Mr. Alpern began his career as a student at Columbia University, obtaining a Bachelor of Architecture in 1964. Later in his career, he returned to his studies at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University, completing a Doctor of Jurisprudence, magna cum laude, in 1992. Mr. Alpern is a registered architect in the state of New York, and he has been admitted to practice law before the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.

A respected voice in his community, Mr. Alpern has been active with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, the Friends Cast Iron Architecture, the Municipal Art Society, the New-York Historical Society, the Brooklyn Historical Society and the Society of Architectural Historians. During his career, he contributed two major collections to Columbia University: the first a collection of architectural drawing instruments which is on display in two large exhibit cases at the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library, and the second a collection of books, drawings and other materials by writer and illustrator Edward Gorey, which was the subject of an extensive exhibition that broke all records for attendance.

Throughout his career, Mr. Alpern has been recognized for his contributions. The Friends of the Upper East Side Historic District gave him a Restoration Award, and the American Institute of Architects gave him a Presidential Citation for "Statues of Repose and the Construction Industry: A Proposal for New York," as published by the Cardozo Law Review. Likewise, he also received the West Publishing Company Award for Outstanding Legal Achievement, as well as the Ruth Emery Book Award from the Victorian Society in America for "The Dakota: A History of the World's Best-Known Apartment Building." He has also published nine other books. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in Finance and Business.
