With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Gimenes has been a senior geotechnical engineer with GGT: Engineering Consultants since 2016. Prior to obtaining his current position, he was a senior geotechnical engineer with SNC-Lavalin, Inc., from 2011 to 2016, MWH Canada, Inc., from 2008 to 2010, and Wood plc. from 2007 to 2008. From 2000 to 2006, he was a geotechnical engineer and manager with Golder Associates Brasil Ltda., and from 1987 to 1991, he was senior geotechnical engineer with Themag Engenharia Ltda. Earlier in his career, Dr. Gimenes was a junior geotechnical engineer with Victor de Mello & Associates from 1985 to 1987.
Dr. Gimenes began his career as a student at the University of Brasília, receiving a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 1981. He subsequently joined Fundação Getulio Vargas, obtaining a Master of Business Administration in 1984. He continued his studies with the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, obtaining a Master of Science in geotechnical engineering in 1988. He then relocated to the United States, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2000.
A respected leader in his industry, Dr. Gimenes has been active with a number of professional organizations. The former president of the Minas Gerais Chapter of the Brazilian Geotechnical Society, he is a member of the Associação Brasileira de Mecânica dos Solos, the International Society for Rock Mechanics and the Canadian Dam Association. A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, he has been certified as a professional engineer by the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of British Columbia and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, as well as in civil engineering by the Federal Council of Engineering and Agronomy.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gimenes has been recognized for his contributions, including having received the Ralph B. Peck Award from Geotechnical Engineering Program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in the World.
