With more than 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Eshbaugh has been recognized as professor emeritus at Miami University since 1998. Prior to his retirement, he rose from the rank of assistant professor to professor of botany at Miami University from 1967 to 1998. Dr. Eshbaugh additionally served as a department chair for Miami University from 1983 to 1988.

From 1965 to 1967, Dr. Eshbaugh excelled as an assistant professor and herbarium curator at Southern Illinois University. He previously served as a special assistant to the chief of the ecology and epidemiology branch at Dugway Proving Ground from 1964 to 1965. Earlier in his career, Dr. Eshbaugh found success as a botany lecturer at Indiana University in 1962.

Dr. Eshbaugh began his career as a student at Cornell University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. Following this accomplishment, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy at Indiana University in 1964. Dr. Eshbaugh was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1959 and went on active duty in 1964 rising to the rank of captain in 1965. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal in 1965.

An active leader in his community, Dr. Eshbaugh has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Ohio Academy of Sciences, and the Explorer's Club. Dr. Eshbaugh has also served as the president of the following professional societies: the Botanical Society of America (1988-89), the Society for Economic Botany (1983-84), the American Society of Plant Taxonomists (1991-92), and the American Institute for Biological Sciences (1995-96). Likewise, he has served on the boards of the: National Audubon Society, Atlantic Salmon Federation, Nature Conservancy (Ohio Chapter), Hawk Mountain, Ohio Academy of Sciences, Catesby Commemorative Trust among others.

Dr. Eshbaugh is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and his scholarship has focused on the flora of the Bahamas and Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.. His expertise is on the systematics, evolution, and ethnobotany of the genera Capsicum, the chili peppers and Empetrum, the crowberries.

Throughout his career, Dr. Eshbaugh has been recognized for his varied contributions. He was honored as the Man of the Year by the St. Mary's River Association and the Citizen of the Year by Oxford, OH. National Audubon awarded him the Great Egret award for a lifetime of service to the cause of conservation at the national, state, and local level. He also accepted the Outstanding Communicator Award from the Ohio Ornithological Society. Dr. Eshbaugh has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the Midwest.
