With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Tuttle has been recognized as professor emeritus of the University of Virginia since 2014, having been a professor of neuroscience from 1998 to 2014. Prior to obtaining this position, he was an associate professor of urology and neuroscience with the university from 1993 to 1998, a research assistant professor from 1990 to 1993, and an assistant professor of neuroscience and physiology from 1984 to 1990. Earlier in his career, Dr. Tuttle was an assistant professor-in-residence and visiting assistant professor with the University of Connecticut from 1980 to 1984.

Dr. Tuttle began his career as a student at the University of Rochester, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in biology and chemistry in 1969. He subsequently joined Johns Hopkins University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in physiology in 1977. Dr. Tuttle held a postdoctoral fellowship with the University of Connecticut from 1976 to 1979. Among his notable achievements, he is most renowned for his research on nerve growth factor dynamics in hypertrophic disease, carbon dioxide transport and chemosensitivity, molecular mechanisms of quantal synaptic transmission, nerve growth factor synthesis by vascular smooth muscle, and trophic regulation of motor neurons.

A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Tuttle has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Cell Biology, the Biophysical Society, the Society for Neuroscience and Sigma Xi. The former chair of the Common Area Planning Commission, he has served as president of the Earlysville Forest Homeowner's Association and a member of the promotion and tenure committee of the University of Virginia.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tuttle has been recognized for his accomplishments. He received a Research Career Development Award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and he has been recognized as a University of Rochester Honorary Scholar and Regent's Scholar for Medicine. He has also been recognized as a fellow of the National Institutes for Health, the National Research Service, the National Spinal Cord Injury Foundation and the Fogarty International Center. Dr. Tuttle has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
