Q: What does being a Consumer Choice Award Winner mean to you? How did winning the Consumer Choice Award impact your business?

A: This award means a lot because it is both well-researched, and voted by the consumers themselves. We are honoured and very appreciative of the recognition! The Consumer Choice Award has a great impact on us because it helps us to highlight what we do best, and continue to shine helping others.

Q: What makes your business unique in the market?

A: People come to our clinic because of our difference and focus on 5 areas:

2) Fusion of knowledge - we use and fuse both East and West medical language approaches to the body

Q: Name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you? How did this person impact your life?

A: Both my grandfathers had a tremendous impact on my life. Not only were they hard working, integral and intelligent men, but they also journeyed through life with benevolence, determination and a positive outlook. They both infused and practiced Chinese medicine in their lives, which also inspired and influenced my career choice. Every day I think of them and their wise words to me, particularly to always "Make Happy" (create a positive outlook and impact).

Q: What is the next priority for your business?

A: Our next areas of business we will be growing and elevating in our clinic is our other natural medicine services besides Acupuncture and Chinese medicine, such as the naturopathic services of IV therapy, supplement and diet therapy, supportive detox, as well as massage therapy.

Q: What are the "core values" of your organization?

Q: Does your company use social media? If so, how had it changed your business/organization?

A: Yes we use social media and enjoy the vessel it creates for us to connect with our patients, the public, friends and family, in a variety of ways!

Q: Where do the great ideas come from in your organization? (Team decisions, management decision etc.)

A: Our ideas come from both the team and management. It has been a great collaboration over the years.

Q: What is ONE characteristic that you believe helped you through your career?

A: Courage. I was never afraid to invest time and energy and money when I could only see the pilot light of my navigation plan, to take calculated chances, explore, create, share, make mistakes and get back up, learn, and walk forward, and take the leap.

GETTING TO KNOW Dr. Sonia F. Tan:

What gets you out of bed every day?... I am excited and grateful every day that I am able to help people restore their health, and inspire others to learn and grow. I feel blessed and am thankful that I have been able to gain the knowledge, experience and skills that enables me to help my fellow humans.
What hobby would you get into if time and money were not an issue?... Playing the guitar! I've always loved music and particularly stringed instruments. Of those, the guitar is one I've dabbled with, and I love both the sound that it can generate, and the music it can create to bring people together in various forms.
What is your favourite quote?... My favourite quote that keeps me leaning forward and blazing a trail, is from Brene Brown "Daring Greatly and Rising Strong" books, which in turn is from Theodore Roosevelt's powerful quote from his 1910 "Man in the Arena" speech: "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; ...who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly."
Are you or your company involved in your community (charity, fundraising, etc.)... Yes! From the beginning, we've always been involved in philanthropy. We've done pro-bono treatment sessions in the Downtown Eastside, we've donated to various non-profit societies many gift certificates of our consultations and treatment sessions, and we do some in-house philanthropy with our own 'Health Days'.
If all jobs had the same pay and hours, what would you do?... I would do the same. I love what I do. I love helping others restore all aspects of their health. The medicine did so much for me and gave me back my self-sustaining body. I enjoy doing the same for others, and teaching and inspiring others the same.
