With 35 years' professional excellence under her belt, Dr. Jen-Jacobson serves as professor emerita with the University of Pittsburgh, where she started as associate professor in 1991.
Additionally, she has been principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grant since 1981. One of the highlights of her career was the award of a prestigious NIH MERIT grant to elucidate principles of protein-DNA recognition and dynamics. The overriding objective of her research has been to link the structural and dynamic properties to the thermodynamic behaviors of protein-DNA complexes. Under the 10 year MERIT award (2001-2011) she was able to diversify her lab not only into computational, crystallographic and fluorescence studies, but she also initiated and led collaborations to apply NMR and ESR spectroscopy to study protein-DNA complexes.
Prior to starting in academia, Dr. Jen-Jacobson received a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois. Ever since she was young, Dr. Jen-Jacobson enjoyed the university and research environments because of her ability to carve her own path.
Throughout her career, Dr. Jen-Jacobson has been recognized numerous times. She has served as an NIH study panel member. In 2001, she was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and in 2002 she received the University of Pittsburgh Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award. She was given the honor of delivering the keynote lecture at the 2009 Gibbs Conference for Biological Thermodynamics. She is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Biophysical Society and the Protein Society. In light of all of her accomplishments, Dr. Jen-Jacobson was previously selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and the 24th edition of Who's Who of American Women.
