SBD International Airport Credits Strategic Location, Attractive Pricing for Triple-digit Growth in Cargo Operations

SBD to exhibit at AirCargo 2019 in Las Vegas

"The growth of SBD's cargo business is evidence of how well the airport serves as a strategic alternative in Southern California..."

SAN BERNARDINO, CA, February 06, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- San Bernardino International Airport (SBD) experienced triple-digit increases in cargo activity in 2018, boosted by the rapid growth of operations by FedEx and UPS, with new long-term leases at SBD. In addition to its strategic location in the heart of a vital goods movement corridor in Southern California, SBD boasts a new dedicated truck access road for air cargo ground movements to ensure greater efficiency for cargo companies at the Airport.

Overall cargo activity at SBD increased 328% over the previous year, rising from 148 flights in 2017 to 633 last year. All-cargo carrier landed weight saw even more substantial growth, climbing 805% from 20,098,000 in 2017 to 181,970,000 pounds in 2018 due to growth in the number and size of cargo aircraft. The Airport, which will be exhibiting at AirCargo 2019 in Las Vegas from February 10-12, invites air cargo and logistics companies to visit booth 203 to learn how SBD can help strategically accelerate their growth.

SBD's facilities and location enable air cargo companies to fast-track deliveries while its attractive cost structure lowers the expenses associated with expanding their operations. "The growth of SBD's cargo business is evidence of how well the Airport serves as a strategic alternative in Southern California," says Mark Gibbs, Director of Aviation. "In 2016, cargo activity totaled just 36 flights. Since then, the number and size of all-cargo carriers has increased rapidly, ballooning to 633 all-cargo flights in 2018, with growth momentum in the cargo segment extending into 2019." On-airport employment supporting air cargo topped 400 in 2018, and is expected to continue rising in 2019 and beyond.

A new dedicated truck entrance on a major arterial roadway separates trucks from other vehicles entering or exiting the Airport and was designed to facilitate speedy truck inspections. The new security-controlled access road was specifically designed to provide greater efficiency for air cargo truck movement.

SBD supports daily, large-scale air cargo operations and one-off flights, and is poised for the continued growth forecasted for the industry. Its Group VI runway easily accommodates the world's largest aircraft, while skilled staff and specialized equipment ensure quick cargo handling and efficient turn times. Onsite U.S. Customs expedites international clearances, and the Airport's facilities include bonded storage and access to a foreign trade zone.

Located in the heart of a growing goods-movement corridor surrounded by the I-10, I-210 and I-215 freeways, SBD's updated facilities include over 60 acres of concrete ramp, a new 5,000-square-foot cross-dock building with 1.6 acres of secured landside ramp, nearly 100 acres of developable land, and specialized cargo equipment.
