Lawrence Rackley Smith received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Braille Association and a Braille Excellence Award from the Braille Authority of North America.

With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Smith has been recognized as professor emeritus of Kalamazoo College since 1996. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor at the university from 1975 to 1996, having been an associate professor from 1963 to 1975. Earlier in his career, Dr. Smith served as an assistant professor at Central Michigan University from 1957 to 1963.

Dr. Smith began his career as a student at Northwestern University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Music in 1954. He continued his studies with the university, completing a Master of Music in 1955. He then joined the University of Rochester, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1958. Dr. Smith is certified as a Music Braille Transcriber.

A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Smith has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the American Music Center, the Society of Composers and Lyricists, the College Music Society, where he is a lifetime member, the Catgut Acoustical Society, and the Association for Technology in Music Instruction.

Among his notable achievements, Dr. Smith is most renowned for being the former president of the National Braille Association in 2003, as well as the principal editor of two works: the second edition of "Introduction to Braille Music Transcription," published in 2005, and "Braille Music Code," published in 2016. He has further composed multiple works for orchestra, band, chamber music, organ and piano.

Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has been recognized for his accomplishments. A Ford Foundation grantee, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Braille Association and a Braille Excellence Award from the Braille Authority of North America. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Entertainment and Who's Who in the Midwest.
