With more than 45 years of professional experience, Dr. Breiseth was the president and chief executive officer of the Roosevelt Institute from 2001 to 2009. Prior to obtaining this role, he was the president of Wilkes University from 1984 to 2001, president of Deep Springs College from 1980 to 1983, and an associate professor and professor at Sangamon State University, now known as the University of Illinois Springfield, from 1971 to 1980 and again from 1983 to 1984. Earlier in his career, Dr. Breiseth was an instructor and assistant professor at Williams College from 1963 to 1971 and a chief of policy guidance and community action at the Office of Economic Opportunity from 1967 to 1969.

Dr. Breiseth obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1958 from the University of California, Los Angeles. He then began work on his PhD at Cornell University. In 1960 he enrolled at Oxford University where after two years of study he received a Bachelor of Letters in Modern British History. He then returned to Cornell University where he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in European History in 1964. Dr. Breiseth subsequently held a Danforth Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in black studies at the University of Chicago from 1970 to 1971.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Breiseth has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the American Historical Association, the Southern Historical Association, the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and Phi Beta Kappa. A contributor of articles to professional journals, he has served as a trustee of Deep Springs College, chair of Earth Conservancy, president of the board of directors of the Springfield Urban League and president of the Telluride Association. He has served on the board of directors of Oosterhout Free Library, Leadership Wilkes-Barre, United Way of Wyoming Valley, the Greater Wilkes-Barre Partnership, the France Perkins Center, the National New Deal Preservation Association, the Ticonderoga Heritage Museum and the Ticonderoga Kiwanis.

Throughout his career, Dr. Breiseth has been recognized for his contributions. The recipient of the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen Award, he is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and a Telluride Oxford Exchange Fellow. In light of his prestige, he has received multiple honorary doctorates from Wilkes University, Misericordia University, Kings College and Luzerne County Community College. He has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East.
