Pierre R. Latour, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

After nearly 40 years in the field, Dr. Latour retired from a very successful career in chemical engineering. The co-founder of Setpoint in 1977, where he later served as the vice president and on board of directors, he eventually sold the company to Cegelec for $45 million in 1991. Dr. Latour also established several other businesses, Setpoint Japan in Tokyo, Setpoint Nippon, Inc., CLIFFTENT Inc. and Biles and Associates, Inc.

During his tenure, Dr. Latour led refinery Advanced Process Control (APC) business developments in Japan, Europe, Australia, India, Venezuela and the U.S. He also successfully developed and implemented corporate strategic plans over a 20-year period, which were profitable every year and fortunately never experienced any serious project, contract, commercial or technical failures. In addition to running his businesses, Dr. Latour worked for such organizations as DuPont, Shell Oil, Dynamic Matrix Control Corporation and Aspen Tech.

A former board of directors for Advanced Extraction Technology, Dr. Latour was also an invited lecturer at Purdue University, the University of Texas and Lehigh University. He is a longstanding member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Chemical Society. Dr. Latour additionally holds one U.S. patent for a polyester fiber that he invented.

During his career, Dr. Latour was responsible for developing the industry standard for APC/optimization technology for oil fractionation, FCC and general distillation. He also developed automation strategies for reformulated fuels, defined methods of justification of APC and Refinery Information Systems (RIS) and created APC and IT technology solutions, performance-based pricing and licensing methods, among other achievements. Dr. Latour has contributed close to 90 articles to various scholarly journals, including 'Radiation Physics Law Give the Effect of CO2 on Earth's Temperatures – A Primer' in "Principia Scientific International' in 2017.

The recipient of a National Science Foundation fellowship from 1962 to 1966, Dr. Latour was also recognized as the Engineer of the Year by Control Magazine for 1999. He was further honored as an Outstanding Chemical Engineer from Purdue University in 2007. Dr. Latour has been featured in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Theodore Rudolph, who was also a chemical engineer, Dr. Latour said that engineering always came easy for him. He notably earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1962 as well as a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1964 and 1966, respectively. He also completed service as a Captain in the U.S. Army between 1968 and 1969, stationed with the Ordnance Corps at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston. Dr. Latour is a registered professional engineer in both Texas and California.
