As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

The descendent of many great doctors, Dr. Haskell recalls wanting to follow their legacy from his formative years. Commencing his career as a student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1961. He subsequently transferred to the University of California, San Francisco, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1965. Soon thereafter, he served as an instructor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1970 to 1971 prior to earning a position as an assistant professor of medicine and surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine between 1971 and 1976.

Ascending the ranks at UCLA from assistant professor to associate professor to full professor of medicine between 1971 and 2003, Dr. Haskell ultimately attained emeritus status in 2003 after his retirement from the university. During his tenure, he also served as the director of the Wadsworth Cancer Center from 1978 to 1992 and chief ethics officer of the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center from 1992 to 2003. Alongside his primary endeavors, he sat on the advisory committee of oncologic drugs with the United States Food and Drug Administration, the oncology committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Medical Oncology, Dr. Haskell is most renowned for his research in the pharmacology and clinical use of L-asparaginase, intra-arterial therapy with doxorubicin chemotherapy studies in breast cancer, and monoclonal antibodies against CEA for immunoscintigraphy. Notably, he is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a master of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, where he previously served as chair of the constitution and by-laws committee. Dr. Haskell also maintains affiliation with the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Among the highlights of his career, Dr. Haskell is most proud of his publication "Cancer Treatment," which was initially published in 1980. Considered a pioneering text in oncological patient care, the book is now in its fifth edition as of 2001. Dr. Haskell also served as co-author of the second and third edition of "Cancer Chemotherapy."

As a testament to his concern for humanistic patient care, Dr. Haskell received the Gold Headed Cane from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1965 and the Mellinkoff Award from UCLA in 1998. He was also featured in the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, as well as the 50th through 53rd editions of Who's Who in America.
