Dr. Parker had a long career as a Professor of Biology at the Mississippi University for Women from 1974 to 2007, also serving as Head of the Division of Science and Mathematics from 1992 to 1998. In addition to his primary faculty and administrative roles, he was an Adjunct Professor of Biology at Mississippi State University for several years and served as Managing Editor of the international Journal of Herpetology from 1991 to 2006. He also performed research in several states on reptilian population ecology and published over 40 papers in major journals on this work including several that were invited for special symposia or books. Google Scholar shows that his work has been cited over 3000 times in journal publications of other biologists. In addition, he was a reviewer for work submitted to many different professional biological journals and was a member of several professional biological societies including the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, Herpetologists' League, and the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists.

Dr. Parker's teaching career included roles as a teaching assistant in graduate school and then as a professor and advisor in undergraduate education. During his career, he taught over 10 different courses in Biological Sciences and advised hundreds of students, many of whom went on to outstanding careers in science, medicine, and art.

Dr. Parker began his career at Wabash College in Indiana where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. He then attended graduate school at Arizona State University (M.S. 1966) and the University of Utah (Ph.D. 1974). Between degree studies, he spent three years in the U.S. Army as a field artillery and air defense officer from 1967 to 1970.

Throughout his career, Dr. Parker has been recognized for his contributions including receipt of a National Defense Education Act Fellowship as a graduate student and research grants from the National Science Foundation, Sigma Xi, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the Mississippi University for Women. He has also been featured in numerous honors publications including Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. As a sign of his dedication to undergraduate education, Dr. Parker has in recent years started two scholarships for Biology majors at the Mississippi University for Women.
