Dr. Oliver is a psychologist who has worked in various school districts throughout the state of California between 1977 and 2016. An expert in grief counseling, who generally works with students after the result of gang violence, she is also trained in isolation psychology and art therapy. During her career, she served as a researcher at the National Science Foundation's McMurdo Station and Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. Dr. Oliver also excelled as a psychologist assistant at the Brea Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Brea, Calif. and a social worker in Monterey County, Soledad, Calif.

Dr. Oliver found success as a workshop leader for Healing Process and Art and a lecturer for the International Council of Science Unions in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in California. She also excelled as a consultant for the University of the Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon in Puyo, Pastaza, Ecuador and the Marcus Horovitz Project in Frankfurt, Germany. She has contributed numerous chapters to books by other authors in her area of expertise throughout her career. Dr. Oliver has also been active with several professional organizations, including the California Association of School Psychologists, the American Psychological Association, the South American Explorers and the Pachamama Alliance.

In 1977, Dr. Oliver was presented with a Service Medal from the United States Congress. She was later recognized as an Outstanding Scientist of the Year by the Marine Technology Society in 1979. The most significant time in her career, Dr. Oliver noted, was during her time at Scripps, which was when she completed her doctoral dissertation on isolation and confinement in Antarctica, as she was notably the only woman stationed in Antarctica involved during her eight-month study. Likewise, Dr. Oliver has been featured in the 25th edition of Who's Who of American Women.

Prior to embarking on her professional path, Dr. Oliver pursued an education at California State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1971. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Arts in psychology in 1975 at Alliant International University. Following these accomplishments, she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from Alliant International University in 1979. Dr. Oliver concluded her studies at the University of San Francisco in 1984, graduating with a Master of Arts in educational leadership.
