Dr. Bukrinsky is a professor of microbiology, immunology and tropical medicine; biochemistry and molecular medicine; and HIV biology and inflammatory diseases in the School of Medicine & Health Sciences at The George Washington University. Taken on board in 2001, he recently began serving as interim chair of the department of microbiology, immunology and tropical medicine in 2018 where he has been responsible for leading the department as it conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research on HIV/AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. Dr. Bukrinsky and his laboratory are currently involved in several research projects on campus regarding the study of HIV compounds, HIV-associated neurocognitive disease and HIV infection of macrophages, among other areas. He has also notably mentored and advised dozens of students during his tenure at The George Washington University.

Born in Moscow, Dr. Bukrinsky originally served as a research assistant, research associate and assistant professor at N.F. Gamaleya Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology between 1978 and 1989. Traveling to the United States in 1990, he acquired a position as a research associate and assistant professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. In 1993, he began teaching as an associate professor, then full professor, at The Picower Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, New York, where he remained for ten years. Between 1994 and 2006, Dr. Bukrinsky also consulted for Bioadvice Corp. in Glenwood Landing, New York.

Dr. Bukrinsky has published over 170 research articles, reviews and book chapters and has lectured internationally on HIV. He has served as editor for Advances in Virology, was a contributing editor for Molecular Medicine, the Journal of Virology, and Retrovirology and was the editor-in-chief for the Open AIDS Journal. Additionally, he is a member of the District of Columbia Center for AIDS Research, the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, the International AIDS Society and the American Society of Microbiology. Dr. Bukrinsky has also been elected as a fellow of the American Heart Association.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Bukrinsky has been awarded 12 patents in his field. He notably received an Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Faculty Scholarship in 2011, a Distinguished Scientist Award from The George Washington University in 2007 and a USSR State Award for Young Scientists in 1987. Prior to embarking on his career, he earned a Doctor of Medicine at the Russian National Research Medical University in 1978 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology in Moscow in 1984. Happily married to his wife, Tatiana Pushkarsky, Dr. Bukrinsky is the proud father of two daughters.
