After accruing more than four decades of practiced experience in ministry services, Ms. Billings retired from her role as a church executive with Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church in New York City in 1993, a position she held for 30 years. At the inception of her career, she served as a clerk for the Illinois Central Railroad in Macomb, MI, in 1947 and a tennis instructor with the Young Women's Christian Association in 1950.
Additionally, Ms. Billings gained valuable experience in her field as a missionary in the Republic of Korea from 1952 to 1963 and a professor of religion and society at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University from 1972 to 1973. Impressively, she also served the Yale Divinity School as a lecturer on world Christianity in 1989. In a career filled with highlights, she is especially proud of delivering an address for the United Methodist Women Assembly in 1973. Since that time, her speech has been used as a basic text for United Methodist Women.
An expert in her field, Ms. Billings holds a Bachelor of Science from Millsaps College, a Master of Arts from Columbia University, and an honorary doctorate from Ewha Woman's University in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Utilizing her vast array of knowledge, she authored "The Waiting People," "In No One's Pocket," "Paradox and Promise in Human Rights" and "Fire Beneath the Frost: Korea, Speaking Out in the Public Space." In her spare time, she also contributes to her community through the North America Coalition for Human Rights, the Center for International Policy and Global Education Associates, among other organizations.
In light of her professional achievements, Ms. Billings was honored with the Public Welfare Medal through the Republic of Korea, the Human Rights Award from the Korean Christian Scholars Association of North America, the Ball Award from the Methodist Federation for Social Action, and numerous features in Who's Who in America and Who's Who of American Women. In addition, she has received Citations in Human Rights from the National Council of Churches in Korea and the Korean Institute for Human Rights. Looking toward the future, Ms. Billings intends to continue enjoying her well-deserved retirement.
